Healing Spirit flutes
These flutes are highly individual personal flutes, often drones, specially made to combine the healing sounds of the flute with the healing energies of specific crystals. Many professionals have remarked that these flutes are hugely beneficial as an adjunct to Reiki and sound healing practices; they are also of great benefit to anyone wanting to enhance their relaxation through flute playing.
How did I come to making Healing Spirit flutes? Having seen an expert flute player play a drone around the body of someone, and seeing her reaction to the vibrations that subsequently suffused her body, I was instantly aware that here was yet another manifestation of the fact that sound is a very powerful healing tool. That led me to a year and a half’s development of drone flutes that embodied exactly the right combination of healing wood energies and vibrational energies of crystals. Subsequently I have found that even single bore flutes benefit from crystals embedded in them
The first of the Healing drones followed on from my Ancient Stone series of flutes, where the air-splitting edge at the front of the sound hole (TSH) was made of stone or crystal; some of the earliest known NA flutes were believed to have been made this way. However, it became apparent that some healing crystals didn’t lend themselves readily to such insetting and shaping, to the extent that the flutes voice could be unpredictable when played. The answer provided by my Spirit Guides was to embed healing crystals in the upper or slow-air chambers (SACs) of the flutes.

That way, the breath of the player, with all its attendant beneficent energies, could be passed over the healing crystal, picking up its energy as it went, before it was passed over and onto the TSH edge to give the flute its voice. The beauty of this system is that by being in the SAC chambers, the crystals will also then pick up the vibrational energy from the wood’s resonance while the flute is being played, resulting in a cyclical accumulation and ever changing blend of healing energies. I usually find that players know what crystals they would like incorporated, but there is often a discussion to settle on the best option. Rose quartz seems to be one of the most popular, although some drones have had a range of crystals within them!

The next stage in this development had to be directed at the type of woods being used. While many players now come with their own ideas of woods and wood combinations that they would like in a flute, I have found that many of our own native woods which have long been recognised for their healing properties make exceptional healing drones. One of the most powerful of these is English Ash. In early Britain the tree was associate with rebirth and new life and its medicinal properties are legendary. It is also said to offer protection and remove unwanted energies. The druids carved sunwise-spiralling patterns into their ash wands as the tree is ruled by the health-giving sun, while also containing the element of fire and representing the great power of water. For these reasons, SVF ash drones are particularly potent instruments, and even flutes made from other powerful woods such as Hazel, Silver Birch, Walnut, Holly and Oak benefit from having the mouth endcap and totem blocks made from ash.
The final development of these flutes lay in the voicing and air flow dynamics. In short, the SVF healing drones are mellow instruments capable of a range of voice, from clear and crisp to soft and breathy. All of them have the drone side ‘softened’, that is to say it is tonally more mellow and sounds quieter than the playing side. This lets the melodies rise over what should be a background accompaniment. The flutes are also designed so that they will play above the octave without the need for the usual heavy overblow; in a drone, such a technique usually causes the drone note to break undesirably to the octave above. The mouthpieces are also designed so that the flutes can be made to produce a slight harmonic ‘beat’ if desired when the pair of fundamental (bottom) notes are played together. It must be said, drones are very particular instruments and do require a new set of playing skills to be learned. The SVF drones however are responsive to the slightest breath and play with great ease – very important when the focus of the player needs to be directed at the healing energies of the flute rather than the playing technique.
