Native American style and English flutes hand-crafted by Second Voice Flutes

Little Owl series - small 5-hole cedar flutes primarily for children, with hole size and position designed specially for little fingers and carved totem blocks bearing animals such as mice on cheese, bears, boats etc! The 6-hole versions are excellent for adult learners and complement tuition books and CDs.

Sacred Spirit series - traditional NAFs built from American woods such as red or yellow cedars or hardwoods such as white oak or black walnut. The western and eastern red cedar woods are carefully chosen for their fragrance, patterning and graining which can be so striking that usually no extra decoration is needed. The yellow cedars can be hand-painted. The range goes from simple 'starter' flutes to more customised and concert quality designs.

Air Spirit (English) series - these range from simple starter flutes to highly individual personal and concert flutes, but all are made from premium indigenous English hardwoods including lime, oak, walnut, ash, hazel, beech, silver birch, holly, alder, yew, rippled sycamore, often with contrasting endcaps, barrel-inlayed woods, and decorated by pyrography, painting or carving. Beautiful 6 and 7 hole creations with flowing lines and very distinctive rich, resonant sounds. Keys low E to high D.

Stage and Studio Flute series - a range of flutes for special occasions and playing in public where a louder than normal flute is needed, and for studio recording where clarity of tone is important. Stage flutes have specially designed air flow and voicing suitable for playing on stage 'miked or unmiked', for ceremonial playing or just playing to a gathering round the tipi fire. Keys low D to high D.

Healing Spirit series - flutes which have been carefully selected for their wood energy, containing healing crystals within their upper chamber; very powerful personal and ceremonial instruments for those interested in using flutes for healing, such as Reiki or Sound Therapy practitioners.

Earth Spirit series - larger style, low-keyed NAFs (low A to Low D). Deep soulful, haunting tones from flutes made in either eastern red or yellow cedar or hard woods such as walnut, lime, spalted beech and cherry.

Toucan series - double-barrelled drone and double-key flutes, usually made of specially imported eastern red or yellow cedar, quilted maple or spalted beech, walnut, alder, often with inlays, contrasting mouthpieces and ends ordecorated with hand-burned designs or painting. Bores are totally independent of each other, and playing both together produces haunting mystical sounds. Keys low B to high D; note the bass drones are a unique easy to hold and play SVF design.

Hitzaz series - middle Eastern scale flutes, played very much like a normal NA flute but sounding totally different! If you want a flute that sounds like a Turkish Ney then try these.

Tree Spirit (English) series - flutes made from tree branches, worked in one piece and hollowed by deep-bore drilling or traditional burning. These magical instruments retain the bark of the tree and are specially treated to minimise degeneration. All have detailed carved and painted birds such as woodpeckers, robins and nuthatches for totem blocks.

Custom Flute series - a selection of special flutes and the stories behind their creation and use... and there's some very elaborate and interesting requests! This has become a large series of flutes and is well worth a look if you want ideas on customizing a flute!

Pyro-Art series - NEW!... a very special series of flutes with stunning pyrography accents along the barrels. These are very unique instruments, each carefully voiced to one of a range of traditional tones, the Spirit of which is then reflected in the intricate designs and patterns burned into the body. Visually and audibly something else!

The choice of mouthpiece shape - tapered, bell or rounded - is very much up to the individual, but bell-shaped is often better for novices simply because the contour of the end allows the flute to be rested on the lower lip, and the upper lip placed against the end of the flute; this is how flutes should be played...not with the end actually in the mouth

Of course, in a way, all flutes are Custom Flutes - there's such a wide range of styles, woods and decoration available, including the treatment of the wood with aromatic oils, carved blocks, personal accents etc. These commissioned flutes are built entirely to client’s specifications and are completely individual. So, what's your flute vision...?
